Off Marathon Win, Privateers Back to Action at Central Arkansas

THE GAME:
The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (3-16, 1-9) faces a short turnaround off a triple overtime game when they face the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears (12-9, 5-4) on Saturday at the Farris Center. Tip is slated for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
 
The Privateers went to three overtimes, and defeated McNeese State 90-86 to win their first Southland game since joining the league in the 2013-14 season. The Privateers held the Cowgirls to just 4-of-22 from three-point range. Four players (two for each side) fouled out in the contest. New Orleans extended the game by hitting buzzer beaters in each of the first two overtimes. Danielle Davis rolled in a three in the first overtime period and Octavia Wilson hit a driving layup with 0.4 seconds left in double overtime.
 
Central Arkansas is on the plus side of .500 after back-to-back wins in conference. The Sugar Bears own wins over Northwestern State and Southeastern in their last two games. Three players average double figures in points including Maggie Proffitt who is averaging 14.0 points per game. Central Arkansas is first in the Southland in three-point field goal percentage (34.1).

LAST TIME OUT:
Danielle Davis scored a career-high 26 points to help lead the Privateers to their first Southland win, a 90-86 decision over McNeese State in triple overtime. Davis went 8-for-15 from the field and also added five rebounds. Halie Matthews posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. Randi Brown added 18 points on 7-of-10 from the field including a big three with under a minute left in the third overtime that gave the Privateers a four-point lead.

NEXT UP:
The Privateers will travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for their second meeting against the Islanders on Thursday, Feb. 12. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
MARATHON LADY:
Danielle Davis played 53 of the 55 minutes in Thursday's triple overtime win, smashing the old school record of most minutes played which was held by Jenny Anderson and Michelle Anderson (47 minutes). Jenny played 47 minutes of a 2OT win against North Carolina State in Dec. 19, 1998. Michelle accomplished the same feat in a 2OT win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 25, 1984.
 
BOARDING UP:
Halie Matthews recorded her first game of double digit rebounds (14) in Thursday's win. Matthews also added a team-best three blocks and now has six blocks in the last three games. The Privateers as a team narrowly won the rebounding battle 54-53.
 
FREE BASKETBALL:
Thursday marked the first time in 25 career meetings that New Orleans and McNeese State went to overtime. It was the first overtime game for the program since Dec. 29, 2008 against Kent State. The last time the Privateers won an overtime contest was on Jan. 3, 2007 against Florida Atlantic.
