BOX SCORE
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (1-0) did not drop a set in the season opener as they defeated the Loyola Wolfpack (0-1) by a 7-0 count on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Â
The match started with the Privateers sweeping doubles at the 1 and 3 spots to take the opening point.
Luis Albuquerque and
Jeffrey Hsu teamed up to defeat Loyola's top pair 6-3 while
Nicolas Kramer and
Gonzalo Garcia finished off their opponents at 6-1.
"The first few matches are at home and we need to take advantage of playing at home. We had a nice crowd here. We started off a little slow in doubles and there was nervous energy early on. As they settled down then they started getting more comfortable."Â
In singles, Hsu made his debut and outlasted Steven Le in the first set to take it 6-4. Hsu went on to finish off Le in a sweep in the second set at 6-0. The Privateers set a strong tone early in singles from Albuquerque who capped off a 6-0, 6-0 win of his own.
Â
Also taking victories were Kramer, Garcia,
Christoffer Appelgren, and
Giacomo Adoncecchi. The sweep finished when Adoncecchi capped off the second set at 6-4. From the trio of Appelgren, Kramer, and Garcia, neither dropped more than three games in their respective matches.
Â
"In singles, I expected a good match for the top three players. Jeffrey did a good job of closing out the second set. The players took advantage of this opportunity and I couldn't be prouder of them," said Kanga.
Â
The Privateers have a breather before their next match against Jackson State a week from Saturday (Feb. 6) at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
