Women's Basketball Finishes First Week of Conference at Sam Houston State

NEW ORLEANS AT SAM HOUSTON STATE
SATURDAY, JAN. 9 | 2 PM
BERNARD G. JOHNSON COLISEUM | HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS

The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (4-7, 1-1 Southland) returns to action with a road trip to Hunstville to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats (6-7, 2-1) Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The Privateers are coming in off a 55-49 home victory against Incarnate Word on Thursday. In the victory, New Orleans got four clutch free throws in the final 25 seconds to help ice the game. Randi Brown (16) and Kayla Mundy (10) each scored in double figures as the Privateers forced 24 turnovers and outscored Incarnate Word by 14 in the paint. The win was the first over Incarnate Word in three tries.

Danielle Davis has been automatic from the free throw line of late. Davis has hit all 12 of her free throws against Arkansas, Lamar, and Incarnate Word. Davis is shooting 85 percent from the free throw line (17-of-20) on the year. Davis also leads the team in assists and is still holding in the top five in the conference in assist-turnover ratio.

In Thursday's win, New Orleans played 10 players. Over the previous three contests, the Privateers played all 15 active team members twice (at Arkansas and Lamar). Against UNCG, 14 of 15 players appeared in the game.

Southland Conference play has seen 12 of 13 teams take a blemish on their conference record. The only team without a loss to this point is Abilene Christian (2-0). The Wildcats handed Northwestern State their first conference defeat on Thursday. On the flip side, 11 of 13 teams have already picked up a win in conference play.

Despite being held to their lowest rebounding total on Thursday, the Privateers still lead the conference in rebounding. New Orleans pulled down 27 boards against Incarnate Word, 16 rebounds below their season average. Mathilde Fogelstrom, who played a season-best 27 minutes, led the team in rebounds on the night with six.

Sam Houston State toppled Southeastern in their Thursday bout 80-56. Shernise Robertson led the team with 29 points and tied a program record for most threes in a game (seven). The Bearkats shot 50 percent from the field in the victory.

Brenda Welch-Nichols is in her ninth season at the helm. Welch-Nichols has beaten the Privateers three times over the last two seasons. In her first ever meeting against New Orleans, Welch-Nichols took a loss during the 2005-06 season while she was the head coach at Mercer.

Saturday's match-up is between the top two scorers in the Southland so far: Robertson is averaging 17.1 points per game while Randi Brown follows with 16.7 points per game. Robertson has scored over 20 points five times this season.

Angela Beadle is in the midst of her senior season after taking a medical redshirt last year due to injury. Beadle is second in the conference in blocked shots and rebounds. Beadle began the year sixth in program history in rebounds and third in blocks.
