Men's Tennis Concludes Play in Battle On The Bayou On A Positive Note

Privateers end fall tournament with competitive matches

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team concluded play in the Battle on the Bayou on Saturday.

Every player ended the day with at least one victory, with one going 2-0 in singles to win his bracket.

"I was very pleased with how the team played today," head coach Burzis Kanga said. "We played competitively against teams that are going to be competing for their respective conference championships. We played much better today than we had yesterday."

In the first flight, Jeffrey Hsu won both of his matches to win the consolation bracket. In his opening match of the day, the sophomore bested Jorman Reyes of Southern Mississippi in two competitive sets 7-6, 7-6 before defeating Oliver Gingas of South Alabama 7-5, 6-2. Gingas defeated Giacomo Adoncecchi 6-2, 6-3 to reach the finals, who also fell in the consolation's third place match 6-3, 6-2 to Reyes. Nicolas Kramer, playing in the fifth place bracket, won his opener against Pearse Dolan of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 before falling in the finals 7-6, 6-1 to Cagatay Soke of Texas a&M-Corpus Christi.

In the second flight, Federico Staksrud gave Clement Marzol of Southern Alabama, the number one seed in the bracket, a competitive first set losing a back-and-forth battle 7-6 before falling 6-0 in the second set. In the third place match, Staksrud breezed past Chad Nguyen of Corpus-Christ 6-1, 6-0. Federico Boscarino and Luis Albuquerque, both playing in a round-robin pool, went 1-1 on the day losing their first matches of the day before winning their respective finales with Albuquerque winning over Michael Kritzinger of ULL 6-1, 6-2 and Boscarino over Rakshit Rishi of Southern Miss 7-6, 6-2 .   

In the lone doubles bracket, Boscarino and Staksrud went 2-0 in doubles in the round-robin pool, besting Kritzinger and Nguyen 6-2 followed by a win over Paul Cook and Maximilian Ilic 6-3. Hsu and Albuquerque, competing in the consolation bracket, lost their opener of the day 7-6 against Tseng and Tortakul of Southern Miss but ended the day on a positive winning 6-1 over Silvo Cocito-Monoc and Jamie Fraser from Louisiana-Lafayette.

UNO is next in action on Friday, Oct. 28, when the Privateers host the Big Easy Classic.
