NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team will open conference play on Saturday when they take on Lamar. A home match against UIW on Monday follows at the Privateer Tennis Center.
The Privateers are looking to get back in the win column after losses in four straight matches. Their last outing was a 4-0 defeat at the hands of New Mexico on March 17. They have also suffered losses to North Dakota, Omaha and #6 LSU in that stretch.
Carlos Melgosa is the first player to reach double figures in singles wins for the Privateers this season. The true freshman is 10-3 against opponents this year and was leading his match against Phillip Bosin of New Mexico at flight two when the tie was clinched by the Lobos.
The Privateers have used nine different combinations in doubles this season and no tandem has played more than eight matches together. As a team, the Privateers are 18-19 in doubles matches this season.
Beltran Fernandez was playing his first match at flight one against New Mexico. The freshman is poised to become the next player to reach double figures in singles wins as he currently has nine on the season. Fernandez has won four of those nine matches in three sets.
There will only be conference matches remaining for the 8-7 Privateers. These are the last home matches before New Orleans travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UTRGV and Nicholls ahead of the Southland Tournament.
The Privateers have won four of the last five against Lamar with dramatic finishes in most. Three of those wins came by a 4-3 score. New Orleans is 3-1 in the last four meetings against UIW.
