Women's Basketball Hosts South Alabama At Lakefront Arena

Privateers look toward back-to-back wins at the expense old familiar foe

New Orleans, Louisiana- Fresh off a resounding 38-point win over Blue Mountain College, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team will try to make it two in a row Saturday, Nov.19, at Lakefront Arena against the University of South Alabama Jaguars.  Tipoff is set for 4 p. m.

The Privateers (1-2) picked their first victory of the season Tuesday night at the hands of Blue Mountain College, 75-37, as they scored 38 points off 36 turnovers including 21 steals. New Orleans turned in a sterling defensive performance holding the Toppers to 26 percent from the floor on 11-of-41 shooting.

The main offensive threat for New Orleans continues to be junior guard Randi Brown (Human Performance), the Southland Conference's third leading scorer at 18.7 a game.  Brown was named College Sport Madness Southland Conference Player of the Week after a 26-point outing against Alabama and 18 points versus Southern Mississippi.

Shania Woods (Accounting), a sophomore center, comes into the game averaging 9 points and 6 rebounds.  Woods was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in a 12-point 7- rebound outing in the win over Blue Mountain College and she is 5th in field goal percentage in the Southland hitting 60 percent of her shots.

The play of Danielle Wright (Biological Sciences) continues to be a pleasant surprise.  The sophomore netted a career-high 15 point in the loss to Southern Mississippi.  She followed that up with 9 points, 3 assists and 4 steals against Blue Mountain College.

The Privateers rank second in the conference in blocked shots at 4.3 a game with freshman center Whitley Larry (Pre Secondary Education) leading the way with 1.7 blocks a contest.

South Alabama (1-2) arrives fresh off its first win of the season, 38-33, over Spring Hill.  Their two losses came at the hands of nationally ranked Florida (85-33) and Central Florida (70-58).

"They rely heavily on guard play and their guards are experienced," said UNO head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "We've got to protect the three-point line and hopefully they'll have a tough shooting night like they did against Spring Hill."

The Jaguars shot a frigid 27.6 percent from the floor including 1-of-16 on three-pointers.

This will be the 48th meeting between the Privateers and the Jaguars in a series that dates back to 1978.  UNO leads the series 29-18.  The last meeting was a 68-47 win for New Orleans on Feb. 3, 2010 in New Orleans when both schools were members of the Sun Belt Conference.
