Women's Basketball Faces Texas Southern At Lakefront Arena

Privateers look to continue winning ways after thrilling win at Jacksonville State

New Orleans- With hopes of carrying the momentum from a last-second win over Jacksonville State, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team will face Texas Southern University, Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Lakefront Arena.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 p. m.

New Orleans (2-3) road a 28-point, 11-rebound effort by junior Randi Brown (Human Performance) to an 81-79 win on the road over Jacksonville State.  Brown canned the winning basket with :08 seconds remaining in regulation for the margin of victory.  For her performance against the Gamecocks, the Houma, Louisiana native was honored as Southland Conference Player of the Week for the third time in her UNO career.

Brown currently leads the Southland Conference (SLC) in scoring at 20.2 points an outing and in points scored with 101.  However, the win over Jacksonville State was special because Brown was not alone.

"It was a great team win because not just one but three or four players stepped up," said UNO head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "We need contributions like that from everyone night after night."

The Privateers had 5 players in double figures at Jacksonville State.  In addition to Brown, senior Jewel Angelo (Interdisciplinary Studies) had a career high 12 points in 11 minutes, sophomore Mariah Wright (Computer Science) had a career-high 10 points, senior Ariele Davis (Marketing) had 11 and sophomore Shania Woods (Accounting) netted 10 while grabbing 7 rebounds.

As a team, the Privateers are ranked second in the Southland Conference in field goal percentage at .416.  New Orleans is third in the SLC in 3-point shooting at .358.

Texas Southern (4-1) spent Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico where they won 2 games in the Puerto Rico Clasico over Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 64-58, and Presbyterian College, 74-62, in overtime.  Artavia Ford is the leading scorer for TSU with 14.4 per game.

"They are very solid with a good inside game and outside game," Davenport says when looking at the Tigers. "It's a good game for us because it will help us get ready for conference play."

This is the third meeting between the Privateers and the Tigers with the series tied at 1-1.  New Orleans took an 88-64 win in New Orleans on Nov. 27, 2000.  One year later, Nov. 27, 2001, Texas Southern turned the tables with a 56-52 decision in Houston, Texas.

After the home game against Texas Southern, UNO will hit the road to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State, Sunday, Dec. 4, before returning home for a match with Trinity Baptist, Monday, Dec.12, at Lakefront Arena.  Tipoff is 11a. m.
