New Orleans, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will travel to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State University Sunday, Dec.4, at Hilton Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 2 p. m. This will be the first meeting of the Privateers and Cyclones. The teams were scheduled to face off in Ames on Nov. 22, 2015, however inclement weather forced cancellation of the match.
New Orleans (3-3) has won two in a row after a hard-fought, 63-57 win over Texas Southern of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The win placed the Privateers at the .500 mark for the first time since December of 2015 after back-to-back victories over Trinity Baptist and Jackson State.
"I think we are at a good place," said Privateer head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. 'Certainly we are not over-confident, but we now know that we can compete although we still have a lot to work on."
UNO was paced by
Randi Brown's (Human Performance) 20 points in the victory over Texas Southern. Brown, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference (SLC) at 20.2 points a game, was voted Southland Conference Player of the Week for the week ending November 28, after a 28 point 11 rebound performance in a win over Jacksonville State, 81-79. The junior guard supplied the game-winning basket with :08 seconds remaining in regulation.
Senior guard
Jewel Angelo (Interdisciplinary Studies) continues her outstanding play off the bench netting her career high 12 points in each of the two UNO victories. The native of Manvel, Texas was 6-of-7 from the free throw line against Texas Southern as the Privateers shot 85 percent hitting 24-of-28 as a team.
Sophomore center
Shania Woods (Accounting) averages 8.8 points an outing and leads the team in rebounding at 6.5. Woods also leads the club in shooting percentage at .511, good enough for 8
th in the Southland Conference.
Mariah Wright (Computer Science), a sophomore guard, has started every game this season and averages 5 points a game. She followed her career high in scoring of 10 versus Jacksonville State with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists against Texas Southern.
Raven Coleman (Interdisciplinary Studies), a senior from Marrero, Louisiana, got her first start of the season and responded with 4 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Coleman also had 9 boards against Jacksonville State.
Iowa State is 5-0 on the season at the time of this writing. The Cyclones will face Mississippi State, ranked sixth in the nation 24 hours before facing the Privateers. They are led by Seanna Johnson, an All-Big 12 performer at guard averaging 16 per game and junior Jadda Buckley knocking down 14 points a game.
Playing in an atmosphere like Hilton Coliseum where the Cyclones average more than 6-thousand fans at home games can only help New Orleans as they prepare for conference play.
"Our goal is to break the 30year drought of post season appearances," Davenport explained. "Playing in front of a large crowd on the road will certainly get you ready for that and you will get that at Iowa State.
New Orleans will be back in action Monday, Dec. 12, at Lakefront Arena when they host Trinity Baptist at 11 a. m.
