The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (6-12, 3-6) will start a road heavy February schedule on Tuesday night when they rematch with the McNeese State Cowgirls (14-7, 6-3) at the Civic Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Â
The Privateers held the lead for the majority of Saturday's contest against McNeese before falling 77-74 in overtime.
Randi Brown scored a career-high 39 points and also set a new mark for field goals made in a game (16). Brown's 39-point output tied the sixth-most in a single game in program history and was the highest point total since Le'Della English scored 41 in a game in 2007.
Â
"Randi's just relaxing and playing within the offense. The majority of 39 points came from us executing but this is her time of year. She plays with a lot of confidence and understands what's at stake. She knows what she has to do for our team to be successful and she's taken that load upon her back," said Coach
Keeshawn Davenport.
Â
At the halfway point in the conference schedule, the Privateers will now start to face a lot of opponents they have seen already this season, starting with Tuesday's contest. Last season, New Orleans was 4-2 in rematch games against Southland teams.
Â
Danielle Davis will reach a milestone when she suits up for the Privateers on Tuesday. It will mark her 100
th career game with 73 of those coming at New Orleans. Davis played 27 games her freshman year at Central Connecticut State. Since coming to the Privateers, Davis has racked up 140 assists and has scored 511 points.
Â
The Privateers have yet to win a road game, but have been in several road contests. "We've just got to find a way to win on the road. It's a fight every night in the conference but we've got to find a way to get the job done. A lot of the road games will be teams we've played already," said Davenport.
Â
McNeese erased a 10-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter due in large part to their rebounding advantage. The Cowgirls out-rebounded New Orleans 35-20 over the second half and overtime. Jayln Johnson scored 30 points on Saturday and was named the Southland Player of the Week after averaging 30.5 points in two wins.
Â
"We've got to make sure that we limit them to one opportunity. We did well in the first half and limited them to one possession but went away from that in the second half. Between boxing out and limiting them to one shot and not losing where shooters are, that is going to be key," said Davenport.
Â
This season, the Cowgirls have defended their home court very well with a 9-1 mark, which is the third best winning percentage in the Southland, trailing only Abilene Christian and Northwestern State. Four of McNeese's last nine games of the season are at home.
