BOX SCORE
NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (3-0) relied on the trio of
Gonzalo Garcia,
Nicolas Kramer, and
Luis Albuquerque to help guide the Privateers to a 5-2 victory over the Alcorn State Braves (0-4) on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
Â
Kramer, Albuquerque, and Garcia all moved their singles marks to 3-0. Albuquerque was the first off the court after a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles, his second such victory on the year. Kramer provided what turned out to be the match clinching point for the Privateers, putting together a 6-3, 6-3 win at #3 singles.
Â
Garcia was in control early against his opponent, Killian Salgado at #4 singles. Garcia sealed the game that moved him ahead 5-1 in the first set by ripping a winner. Garcia conceded the next two games before eventually finishing off the opening set. In the second set, Garcia swept past Salgado to finish off the match.Â
"Nick's a good, solid player. He has a good game style for the hard courts and he's a workhorse," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "This was a tough Alcorn State team and we jumped out on top. Luis played really well and Gonzalo also got off the court so we got those first four points."
Â
The Privateers had a quick outing in doubles from Garcia and Kramer who won 6-0 at the #3 spot. The first point of the day was sealed when Albuquerque and
Jeffrey Hsu pushed to a 6-4 win past the Braves' top tandem of Nikita Kostikov and Nischay Rawall.
Â
Alcorn State earned their two points at the top two spots in singles. Kostikov won a marathon third set tiebreaker at #1 singles. Vasudev Vijayaraman also posted a victory at #2 singles, winning the match in straight sets which included a second set tiebreak.
Â
The Privateers will next face Troy on Feb. 26 at home with a 2:30 p.m. scheduled start.
