NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (3-1) was handed their first loss of the season by a 7-0 score at the hands of the Troy Trojans (2-10) on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Â
The Privateers put up a battle in the doubles point as
Gonzalo Garcia and
Nicolas Kramer went back and forth with their opponents, Francisco Yim Kim and Hassan Ndayishimiye at the #3 position. That match went unfinished at 4-4, but the Trojans were able to prevail 6-2 at #1 doubles and 6-3 at #2 doubles to earn the first point.
Â
Troy had a couple of quick matches in singles to extend their lead to 3-0. Pablo Moreno and Mustapha Belcora picked up wins at 2 and 3 singles respectively and only lost five games in between them to put the Trojans in position to clinch.
Â
Gonzalo Garcia made a huge rally for the Privateers in the second set. After losing the first, Garcia was down 5-0 to Andy Lau, but broke serve twice and won four straight games to pull the score to 5-4. However, Lau won the next point and clinched the match for Troy.
Â
Luis Albuquerque was the only Privateer to push to a third set. Albuquerque won the first set of his match 6-3, but lost the next two sets at 6-3 and 10-5. The Trojans won the remaining two matches to complete the sweep.
