NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (1-0) continues their season-opening home stand on Saturday when they face the Jackson State Tigers on Saturday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
The Privateers had a solid beginning to the spring with a 7-0 win over Loyola on Friday, Jan. 29. All six singles matches were finished in straight sets. New Orleans has posted four victories over Loyola since 2010 and all of them have come by a 7-0 score line.
"Things will slowly start to pick up," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "They have a new coach, but it's a home match and we need to take advantage of that. It's another match for our players to get themselves mentally prepared. We've had a good week of practice and we'll be ready for the challenge."
Jeffrey Hsu made his debut at #1 singles and won his first collegiate match 6-4, 6-0. Hsu also teamed up with
Luis Albuquerque in doubles to win 6-3 at the #1 position. Also, the returners picked up where they left off in the fall.
Christoffer Appelgren and
Luis Albuquerque dominated their spring debuts after winning individual titles at the Big Easy Classic.
Jackson State comes in with an 0-3 mark and has not played a home match yet. The Tigers lost their season opener to Tulane and followed with losses at Nicholls and South Alabama. Against Nicholls, Federico Boscarino picked up the lone point in a 4-1 loss.
