NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (6-4, 1-1 Southland) enters the weekend on a three-match winning streak as they take on the Lamar Cardinals (10-5, 1-0) on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The Privateers clinched their third straight victory, taking a 6-1 decision over the Omaha Mavericks on March 23. UNO rebounded from losing the doubles point to sweep singles: four of the six singles matches were completed in straight sets while
Giacomo Adoncecchi and
Karim Shokeir each won three-set battles.
On top of the back-to-back 4-3 wins over UT-Rio Grande Valley and Incarnate Word, the Privateers are coming in with momentum, which has been headed up by senior,
Gonzalo Garcia. On the season, Garcia is 6-2 in singles and has combined with teammate,
Nicolas Kramer for a 5-3 mark in doubles.
Last season, Lamar took both meetings against UNO. The Cardinals won a 6-1 decision in the season finale in 2015. The teams matched up again a week later in the Southland Tournament, which Lamar won by a 4-1 count.
Lamar enters having won four of their last five including two sweeps in their last two matches. The Cardinals defeated Nicholls 7-0 and followed up with a non-conference 7-0 triumph over Texas-San Antonio. All five of the Cardinals' spring losses have come on the road.
Leading the way is Michael Feucht who is Lamar's No. 1 player in singles. Feucht holds a 9-5 record along with teammates, Sebastian Santibanez and Benny Schweizer. Feucht and Schweizer have been a tough team in doubles as well: the tandem hold a 9-2 mark entering the weekend.
The Privateers then face in-state foe and 44th-ranked LSU (11-8, 3-5 SEC) on Sunday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers will play a doubleheader as they start the day with Georgia. Jordan Daigle is ranked 69th in the nation in singles and is 8-9 in singles play during the spring.
