The University of New Orleans women's basketball team (8-18, 5-12 Southland) will suit up for their season finale and Senior Day against the Northwestern State Lady Demons (18-10, 12-5) on Saturday at the Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Â
Danielle Davis,
Yasmin Taylor,
Mathilde Fogelstrom, and
Dasia Batiste will be honored in the pregame ceremony. All four will be graduating this spring and Davis will be receiving her Master's degree. Taylor and Fogelstrom are the first two players Coach
Keeshawn Davenport has had for all four seasons.
Â
"It's a little emotional when you're a head coach and you get to the point where you're graduating that first four-year class and it just brings up a lot of memories," said Davenport. Â "These young ladies have been through so much, and they've stayed so faithful to the program."
Â
The last game saw a couple of underclassmen make a large impact as UNO squeaked by Southeastern 57-55 on Thursday night.
Randi Brown poured in 22 points while
Shania Woods set new career highs and achieved her first double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Heading into Saturday, Brown is three points shy of 800 for her career.
Â
UNO's victory was also the fourth straight over Southeastern and the second consecutive season in which they swept the season series against the Lady Lions. The Privateers also clinched a winning home record for the year as they are 7-5 at the Lakefront Arena heading into the finale against the Lady Demons.
Â
Between the quartet of players who will be honored in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader are 306 games played and various individual achievements on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
Â
"Just me recalling when I recruited them and now they're leaving after Saturday, it's just really bittersweet to know that time doesn't wait for anyone," said Davenport. Â "I'm very proud of what they have accomplished on and off the court. These young ladies have been champions in the classroom and in the community."
Â
Northwestern State has a hold on the 2-seed for the Southland Tournament next week after the Lady Demons toppled Stephen F. Austin 72-51. Beatrice Attura was one of four Lady Demons in double figures with 18 points.
Â
Janelle Perez is a two-time All-Southland player and is in the top ten in scoring this season with 15.4 points per game. Perez is also the team's leader in assists, three-pointers, and minutes. The Lady Demons defeated the Privateers 70-53 in the first meeting and are 9-5 all-time against UNO going into Saturday.
Â
Keisha Lee has stepped up from a scoring perspective for Northwestern State as well. After a two-point performance against Central Arkansas on Jan. 27, Lee has posted double figures in seven of the last eight games. During that span, she has raised her scoring average from 6.5 points per game to 9.2.
