NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (7-8) will also close out their regular season this week with a match against a local foe in the Xavier Gold Rush (13-5) on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Gonzalo Garcia is the lone senior on the Privateers roster and will be playing his last regular season match. Garcia has been with UNO for three seasons after transferring from Louisville at the conclusion of his freshman year.
Garcia's career highlights include successful stints in the fall. Most notably as a senior, Garcia ran through the consolation bracket in Flight 2 of the Big Easy Classic, which helped vault the men's team to a team championship in October. In the spring, Garcia leads the team in singles wins with nine in 14 matches.
UNO is locked into the three seed, which they clinched after defeating Nicholls. The Privateers will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of the tournament.
Xavier enters having won back-to-back matches. The Gold Rush collected a 7-2 win over Jackson State and won 5-0 over Alcorn State. Earlier this season, the Gold Rush also had a victory over Troy and own four wins against Division I schools.
The Gold Rush sport a veteran laden lineup with three seniors and three juniors. Xavier is led by Karan Salwan who is a transfer from Utah State who in mid-February was named GCAC Player of the Week. Salwan has been the No. 1 player in the Xavier rotation.
