Men's Tennis to Face Nicholls, Louisiana-Lafayette on Weekend

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team (6-6, 1-2 Southland) will face two opponents over the weekend and will start it off with a conference bout at Nicholls on Friday at 2 p.m. The Privateers will then host Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Privateers have lost back-to-back matches entering the play and have faced a pair of tough opponents in that stretch. UNO dropped a 6-1 decision to Lamar and was swept by nationally ranked LSU in their last outing on Sunday, April 3.

The match on Friday will determine who will earn the 3-seed in the men's tournament. Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are both 3-0 while UNO is a half-game ahead of the Colonels heading into Friday's match. Last season, UNO defeated Nicholls by a 6-1 score in late February at the University Tennis Center.

UNO has been led in singles by Gonzalo Garcia who has eight wins under his belt in 11 matches. Garcia is 5-2 at No. 3 singles, and 3-1 at No. 4. In doubles, the team of Luis Albuquerque and Jeffrey Hsu have combined to post a 6-1 mark, all at No. 1 doubles.

Nicholls (3-12, 1-3) has defeated Jackson State, Incarnate Word, and Omaha to account for their spring victories. In their last outing, the Colonels lost 5-2 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sam Meessen leads the team in singles victories with five.

Louisiana-Lafayette (15-10) won both matches against Xavier (La.) in their last outing on Sunday. The Ragin' Cajuns have played seven ranked team this season at the time of those matches and have two wins (North Florida and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Edgar Lopez has posted a 12-4 singles mark while playing between No. 1 and 3 singles.
