New Orleans, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will take Interstate 10 West on Thursday, January 26 to face the McNeese State Cowgirls in a Southland Conference contest. Tipoff is set for 5 p. m.
New Orleans just had its three game winning streak snapped by Central Arkansas in a close one, 55-51 last Saturday at Lakefront Arena. McNeese (10-8,5-2) defeated Northwestern State 68-52 in its last outing. New Orleans sits alone in fourth place in the Southland Conference standings while McNeese is in a three-way tie for third.
New Orleans head coach
Keeshawn Davenport sees motivation as a result of the tough home-loss to Central Arkansas.
"Someone just stole something from us in our house so we must steal something from someone else in their house." Davenport added, "This team does not hang their heads. They respond in practice and focus on what they need to do to be successful the next time."
The game will feature UNO, the best 3-point shooting team in the Southland Conference (SLC) 92-of-265 for .347 percent, against McNeese, the best in the conference at defending the 3-pointer 89-of-310 for .287 percent.
Despite a season-low 12 points in the loss to Central Arkansas, Junior
Randi Brown (Human Performance) continues to lead the SLC in scoring at 21.1 a game. She also leads in points scored with 359. The Houma, Louisiana native has reached double figures in every game this season and has scored 20 or more points in 9 of 17 games.
Brown also leads New Orleans in assists (2.4) and steals (29).
Sophomore
Shania Woods (Accounting) is the leading rebounder for the Privateers pulling down 7.4 a game, good enough for 8
th in the conference, and she averages 9.4 points a contest. The Cypress, Texas native is 7
th in the Southland in field goal percentage hitting 53 percent of her shots.
Although neither has started a game this season,
Jewel Angelo (Interdisciplinary Studies) and
Kayla Mundy Human Performance) are next on the scoring list as both average 5.8 points per game. Mundy has hit double figures in 3 of the last four games for UNO.
McNeese State is led in scoring by guard Victoria Rachal who averages 10.1 a game. The Cowgirls rely on balanced scoring with seven players averaging between 10 and 7 points per game.
"They are the epitome of a team. They are good rebounders and they still have enough three point shooters," says Davenport.
McNeese is tops in the league in offensive rebounding at 43.9.
The Privateers hold a slim 14-13 advantage over the Cowgirls in the all-time series between the two schools. McNeese swept the season series last year winning at New Orleans (1-30-16) 77-74 in overtime despite 39points by
Randi Brown, and 92-63 in Lake Charles (2-2-16).
New Orleans faces Stephen F. Austin, Saturday, Jan. 26, in Nacogdoches, Texas before returning home to face the Lamar Cardinals Thursday, February 2 at 7 p. m.
