Volleyball Shoots For Three In A Row When Northwestern State Comes To town

Privateers feeling confident after consecutive road wins

New Orleans- On the heels of a couple of successful outings on the road in Hammond, Louisiana and Beaumont, Texas, the University of New Orleans volleyball team returns to the Human Performance Center, Thursday, October 19 at 6:30 p. m. to face Southland Conference (SLC) rival Northwestern State.

New Orleans (3-5,9-11 SLC) is beaming after taking two straight contests on the road over Southeastern Louisiana 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 29-27, 25-19, 15-12) and Lamar 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 15-11).  Both matches were five-set affairs as UNO sports a 6-3 mark in matches going five sets this season.

"It's tunnel vision, we try to stay within the team on the court," said head coach Millicent Van Norden about winning on the road.  "Our sideline has done a good job of doing some cheers that are like re-set drills.  So as long as we focus on the process and not the crowd, it's worked a lot better."

In the win over Lamar, New Orleans showed balance on offense lead by junior Blessing Dunn with 16 kills and 18 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and sophomore Brianna Vega with a team-high 18 kills to go along with 8 digs.

Going into Thursday's match against Northwestern State, Kaitlyn Grice is tops in the SLC in hitting percentage at .352.  She had 11 kills and 8 digs in the win over Lamar.

Lane Hindenburg, a junior, had 11 kills against the Cardinals and sported a .346 hitting percentage.  Samantha Uline contributed 17 digs while Sarah Thomas and Nela Grau had 34 and 22 assists respectively.

Northwestern State (10-13,5-3 SLC) is coming off a defeat at home at the hands of Houston Baptist 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 16-25, 15-9).   The Lady Demons are led by Reagan Rogers who is sixth in the conference in kills with 273 for an average of 3.25 per set.  Kathryn Wristen leads in number of assists at 812 and she is fourth in the SLC in assists per set at 9.33.  Channing Burleson is fourth in digs averaging 4.51 per set.

Following the Thursday date with Northwestern State, UNO will host Central Arkansas, Saturday, October 21 at the Human Performance Center at Noon.
