New Orleans-The University of New Orleans Privateer volleyball team is looking forward to returning to the "friendly confines" of the Human Performance Center after three consecutive matches on the road in the Lone Star State of Texas. New Orleans will play its first home game since a five-set loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on September 23, when they host Houston Baptist, Saturday, October 7 at Noon.
UNO (7-10, 1-4 Southland) loss three straight road outings to Sam Houston State, Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin, the latter Wednesday evening in three sets, 25-12, 25-9, 26-24. Houston Baptist (13-5,5-1 Southland) comes to town fresh off a 3-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond Thursday evening.
"Houston Baptist is tall," said Privateer head coach
Millicent Van Norden. "We expect to be efficient, be fast to offset their height and to block for points in order to be in the game."
New Orleans is paced by
Kaitlyn Grice, a junior form Valrico, Florida who ranks second in the Southland Conference in hitting percentage at .347. She has 137 kills and only 32 errors on the season. Grice ranks third in the Southland Conference in blocks with a total of 79 for 1.22 per/set.
Junior
Blessing Dunn leads the team in digs (194) averaging 2.98 per set. While Nela Grau is tops on the team in assists with 6.71 a set. In the loss to Stephen F. Austin, sophomore
Brianna Vega led New Orleans with a .300 hitting percentage while
Rhyan Rand, a freshman and senior
Rondolyn Bryant tallied 6 kills each.
The Huskies are led by Baylee Banks who tops the conference in kills at 3.83 per set, and Kayla Davenport with a hitting percentage of .336, good enough for fifth in the conference.
The Huskies are near the top of the Southland in a number of categories as a team, 3
rd in hitting (.236), 2nd in opposition hitting (164), assists (12.81), kills (13.78), blocks (2.55) and digs (16.30).
After Saturday's match, the Privateers will have a week off before traveling to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana, Saturday, October 14 at 1 pm.
