New Orleans Returns From final Exams With A Morning Date Versus Xavier

Randi Brown still tops among Southland Conference scorers

New Orleans- After time away from the court to tackle final exams, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team will return to action Thursday, December 14 at Lakefront Arena against Xavier University of Louisiana.  Tipoff is 11 a. m.

The last time New Orleans (1-6) was on the court was a 79-56 loss at Tulane on December 5.  The Xavier Gold Nuggets (5-2) are in the midst of a five-game winning streak.

"They are happy that finals are over," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "It's a relief to have the academic portion done and now we can just focus for a little while on basketball and getting better."

Senior guard Randi Brown continues to lead the Privateers in scoring averaging 20.0 points per game.  The Houma, Louisiana native continues to lead the Southland Conference in scoring and is 129 points shy of surpassing Carvie Upshaw (1985-89) as the program's number-two scorer all-time.

Brown also leads UNO in minutes played (34.5), assists (2.4) and steals (2.6).  Randi Brown will complete her athletic career at UNO as a graduate-student after receiving her degree in exercise physiology from the University of New Orleans this week.

Center Shania Woods recorded her second double-double of the season versus Tulane with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  She had a 20-point, 19-rebounds outing against Houston on November 18.   The Houston, Texas native averages 7.9 rebounds a contest, good enough for third in the Southland Conference.

Xavier is a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  The Gold Nuggets are coached by Bo Browder in his 19th season at the helm.

Although junior guard Essence Wells has started only to games, she leads the Gold Nuggets in scoring at 10.3 a contest.  And Junior Mikayla Barnes, another guard, leads in rebounding with 5.7 a game.

"They are a typical Bo Browder, well-coached team.  They have guards who can penetrate, shoot and press so we are looking for an up-tempo game," said Davenport.

The Next time the Privateers take the court will be Sunday, December 17, in Monroe, Louisiana when they face Louisiana-Monroe.  Tipoff is 2 p. m.
