Game 11: WBB Welcomes Texas Southern Thursday

Randi Brown is coming off a Southland Conference Player of the Week recognition

NEW ORLEANS - Expect a shootout when the University of New Orleans (3-7) entertains Texas Southern University (5-4) Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lakefront Arena. The game will pit two of the nation's leading scorers in Randi Brown and Joyce Kennerson.

The defending Southland Conferenece Player of the Week (second time), Brown leads the league in scoring at 21.7 points per game and Kennerson is the nation's leading scorer, averaging 26.6 points a contest.

UNO has won back-to-back ballgames for the first time this season, dominating its way past Xavier University 85-50 Thursday and the University of Louisiana at Monroe Sunday 89-51.

Brown was also named Louisiana Sportswriter's Association Player of the Week and College Sports Madness Southland Player of the Week Monday. The Houma, Louisiana native averaged 28.5 points during the week along with 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists a contest in the victories over Xavier and ULM.

Sophomore forward Asia Woods collected career-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win over ULM. It was the first win on the road for the Privateers this season.

Shania Woods, a junior center, is currently the No. 5 leading rebounder in the Southland Conference with 7.2 a game.  The Houston native also averages 9.8 ppg. Point guard Mariah Wright was solid against the Warhawks with nine points, three assists, four steals and only one turnover in 32 minutes of play.

By winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament last season, the Lady Tigers qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Their last outing was an 85-59 win over Paul Quinn College as Kennerson, a junior guard, led the way with 33 points. The Port Arthur, Texas native had a season high 35 in a win at Sam Houston State of the Southland Conference.

UNO defeated TSU last season at Lakefront Arena, 63-57, snapping a 3-game winning streak for the Lady Tigers. Brown led the scoring with 20 points. Kennerson paced Texas Southern with 15.

After facing TSU, New Orleans opens Southland Conference competition on the road against Abilene Christian, Thursday, December 28 at 7 p. m.
