Women's Basketball Looks To Extend Win Streak Against Southeastern Louisiana

Privateers sit alone in third place in the Southland Conference after wins over Nicholls and Incarnate Word

New Orleans, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will attempt to equal its longest winning streak of the season—3 games--- when they travel to Hammond, Louisiana to face the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana, Saturday, Feb. 11 at University Center.  Tipoff is 3 p. m.

New Orleans (12-10, 7-5) reached its greatest point total of the season in conference play when they defeated University of the Incarnate Word, 84-58 Thursday night in Lakefront Arena.   The Privateers protected the ball better than any team in the Southland Conference this season committing only 3 turnovers in the win.

"I still can't believe we had only three turnovers,"  said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "If we can continue to take care of the ball like that or in that ballpark we will give ourselves more opportunities to score."

Guard Randi Brown continues to score as she climbs up the all-time scorers list at UNO.  The Southland's leading scorer (20.3) has 447 points on the year and is now in sixth place on the all-time list.   She currently has 1,258 points for her career and she is 26 points shy of passing Cathy Stiles (1980-84) for fifth place.

Brown, a junior, also leads the Privateers in minutes-per-game (30.4), assists (2.6), steals (1.8) and 3 pointers made (62).  The Houma, Louisiana native had 45 points on New Year's Eve against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a Southland Conference single game high this season.

Shania Woods is the second leading scorer on the squad averaging 9.0 a game.  She also leads the Privateers in rebounding at 7.1.  The sophomore has already surpassed her freshman season marks in points, rebounds, and blocks.

Perhaps the key to UNO's recent success has been the play of the reserves.  In the win over Nicholls, the bench scored 43 of 81 points and followed that with 37 bench-points and 23 of 39 rebounds against Incarnate Word.

Junior forward Halie Matthews has been red-hot with four consecutive double figure outings off the bench, the latest a 10-points, 4- rebounds, 3-assists and 2-steals performance versus Incarnate Word.  She was joined by Jewel Angelo, a senior, who nets 6 points a game and junior Kayla Mundy (6.4) who had 16 points and 6 boards against Nicholls State and 9 points and 10 rebounds in the Incarnate Word win.

"Halie has been coming off the bench with great energy, focus and effort.  But it's been a group effort with Jewel, Kayla and Danielle.  Our bench has made all the difference in the world," said Davenport.

Southeastern Louisiana (4-19,2-10) is led by the conference's fifth leading scorer at 17.3 a game in junior Taylin Underwood.

New Orleans leads the season series between the two schools 20-18 and the Privateers have won the last four meetings.

After the trip to Hammond, the Privateers will return home to meet McNeese State at Lakefront Arena, Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p. m.
