NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team looks to keep its undefeated record in tact this upcoming weekend, as the Privateers host a pair of matches starting with Loyola (New Orleans) on Friday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 11, UNO hosts regional foe Southern Miss at noon.
In New Orleans' season opener last weekend, the Privateers (1-0) cruised to a 6-1 victory over Alcorn State. Sophomore
Jeffrey Hsu won matches at UNO's top position in both singles and doubles play en route to earning his first-ever Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
"Saturday against Southern Miss is going to be a tough match," head coach
Burzis Kanga. "Everyone is going to have to bring their best in what should be an evenly-matched contest. Hopefully a victory on Friday against Loyola and home court advantage will tilt the match in our favor."
Loyola (2-1) enters the match fresh off a 5-4 victory over Southeastern University. The Privateers have fared well against Loyola, winning the past five matches including a 7-0 victory last season.
While New Orleans has had success against their Friday opponent, Saturday's match is against a Southern Miss (3-1) team that has won nine out of the last 10 in the series. After starting the season with three-straight victories, the Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the spring 6-1 against South Alabama in their last match.
Following the weekend matches, the University of New Orleans opens up Southland conference play on Friday, Feb. 17 when they host Nicholls at 2 p.m.
