NEW ORLEANS-Three seniors will take the floor at Lakefront Arena for the final time when the University of New Orleans Privateers (13-13,8-8) host the University of Southeastern Louisiana (5-23,3-14), Thursday, Mar. 2, at 5:30 p. m.
Jewel Angelo (Interdisciplinary Studies) of Manvel, Texas,
Ariele Davis (Marketing) of Alexandria, Louisiana and
Raven Coleman (Interdisciplinary Studies) of Marrero, Louisiana will be honored during Senior Day ceremonies for their immense contributions to the New Orleans basketball program.
"They have seen the roughest of the rough and now they are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," said an emotional head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "They had a great part in rebuilding the program."
"It brings tears to my eyes to think of the tremendous growth as a person by
Ariele Davis. I'm so proud of her having already graduated and is going through grad school"
"
Raven Coleman is a walk-on but you wouldn't know it. She's given her blood sweat and tears to the program and she'll be graduating in June."
"
Jewel Angelo, her best days have been these last days. She came in four years ago with the promise that we were going to Katy and get a ring."
The game is important for UNO in terms of post season tournament seeding. A win over Southeastern would assure the Privateers of the fourth seed and a first round bye. The top 8 teams qualify for the conference's post-season tournament held in Katy, Texas, March 10-13. Three teams, McNeese State, Northwestern State and Incarnate Word are all one game behind the Privateers with 7-9 records.
"We need to win against Southeastern in case something crazy happens. We lost to Northwestern State and if they win their last two games, they can slip into the fourth seed. We'll have the same record but they won the head-to-head," explained Davenport.
Randi Brown (Human Performance) continues to pace the Southland Conference in scoring at 21.5 points a game and 22.7 in conference games only. She leads the SLC in points scored with 559.
She is third in the conference in 3-pointers made (73) and has made 73-of-200 long range shots (.365). The junior also leads the team in assists averaging 2.6 a contest.
Shania Woods (Accounting) is the second-leading scorer for the Privateers (9.5) and leads the team in rebounds (7.1) good enough for 8th in the conference. The sophomore has been among the top percentage shooters in the Southland Conference currently hitting 100-of-191 for a percentage of .524, ranking her 7th in the conference.
Senior guard
Jewel Angelo continued her fine play off the bench with a 19-point effort in the loss to Northwestern State. Angelo averages 7.1 points a game and has reached double figures 10 times this season including a high of 23 points against McNeese on Feb. 16.
Redshirt-sophomore point guard
Mariah Wright (Computer Science) is coming off scoring a season and career high 13 points against McNeese State.
As a team, New Orleans is tops in the Southland in 3-point shooting percentage (.355), 4th in field goal percentage (.427), 4th in scoring offense (70.9) and 5th in blocks with 3.7 a game.
Southeastern defeated New Orleans on Feb. 11, in Hammond, 85-70. It was the last win for the Lady Lions who have dropped four in a row since that win.
Taylin Underwood, who had 30-points in the first contest, leads SLU in scoring with 17.9 points a game. Charliee Dugas is the club's second-leading scorer at 10.8 points. She had 21 against the Privateers in the first game.
The Privateers lead the all-time series with Southeastern Louisiana 22-17.
New Orleans will close the regular season, Saturday, Mar. 4, on the road in Thibodaux, Louisiana at 1 p. m against Nicholls. For tickets to all Privateer Athletics events, contact the UNO Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 280-GAME (4263) or via the Internet by clicking
