NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis hosted Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon, losing to the visiting Rattles despite ending a five-match slump in doubles play.
In the loss, junior
Giacomo Adoncecchi improved his career-best undefeated streak in singles play to six matches, winning five with one unfinished contest. The junior is currently 7-1 in singles play, matching his career-high for victories in a single season.
"[Adoncecchi] is a fighter," head coach
Burzis Kanga said. "He has been playing great tennis lately and has been one of our more reliable guys all season. Overall, we tried some new doubles pairings today which worked so we will most likely continue with them. March has been a tough month for our team, we have played a lot of matches and it's starting to take its toll on the team. We have two days off to regroup before we take on Incarnate Word on the road."
New Orleans (4-5) won the doubles point with victories at the top two doubles flights. Florida A&M (5-10) won 6-3 over senior
Luis Albuquerque and Adoncecchi, but a 7-5 triumph by the duo of juniors
Federico Staksrud and
Federico Boscarino at the top slot put the fate of the doubles point on the second court. Sophomore
Jeffrey Hsu and
Nicolas Kramer went back-and-forth with their Rattlers counterparts, eventually pulling through 9-7 in the tiebreaker game to take the 7-6 victory.
In singles play, Florida A&M took the overall lead 2-1 after Staksrud and Albuquerque lost via retirements on courts two and five. The Rattlers moved one game away from the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Boscarino before Adoncecchi's 6-2. 6-2 win at the sixth flight made it 3-2. The match ended on court four, where Kramer dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match.
Hsu was leading at the top flight 7-5, 4-1 before the match was called off due to Florida A&M winning the overall contest.
The Privateers are back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 14, when they take on Incarnate Word to begin a streak of three-straight matches in Texas.
