Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season On The Road Against Nicholls

With tournament bye in hand Privateers look to close regular season on a winning note

New Orleans, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will head to Katy, Texas, site of the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament armed with a bye as the number four seed.  But first, the Privateers will try to end the regular season on a winning note when they travel to Thibodaux, Louisiana for a date with Nicholls,  Saturday, Mar. 4, at Stopher Gym.  Tipoff is set for 1 p. m.

New Orleans (14-13,9-8) wrapped up the number four seed in the tournament with a 102-87 win over Southeastern Louisiana.  However, there is still plenty of motivation going into the final regular season outing.

"Getting to win number 15 is incentive.  We were 15-14 my senior year (2001) that was also the last winning season.  So there's still a lot on the line to accomplish," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.

Randi Brown (Human Performance), the Southland's leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, followed her 35-point performance in the loss to Northwestern State with a 41-point night against Southeastern Louisiana.  It was her second 40-plus game of the season and she joins UNO All-American Sandra Hodge as the only players in program history with multiple 40-point games.   Hodge exceeded 40 points three times.

Brown has 600 points for the season and a total of 1,411 for her career, placing her fifth all-time among scorers at UNO.  She needs 35 points to move into third place on the list surpassing Jenny Anderson (1995-96) and Le'Della English (2004-08).

"I don't know what she has been eating for breakfast lately but she needs to keep eating it."  Davenport continued, "You get to coach a player like Randi once in a lifetime and I'm glad the Lord picked me to be her coach."

Center Shania Woods (Accounting) was outstanding against Southeastern with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.   The sophomore averages 9.8 points and 7.3 rebounds an outing ranking her eighth in rebounds.  Woods has hit 106-of-200 shots placing her 7th in the Southland at .530.

Jewel Angelo (Interdisciplinary Studies), a senior connects for 7.2 points a game.  She had 11 points and 3 assists in her final home game Thursday against Southeastern---her 11th double figure game off the bench.

Junior guard Kayla Mundy finished with 14 against the Lady Lions hitting 6-of-9 from the field.

When UNO defeated Nicholls last month, Angelo (12), Mundy (16) and Halie Matthews (15) scored a total of 43 bench-points for the Privateers in an 81-77 win.

The Privateers continue to lead all Southland Conference members in 3-point shooting percentage hitting 142-of-400 for .355 percent.

Nicholls State is 9-19 overall and 6-11 in conference play during an injury-plagued season.  They lost their last outing to Lamar, one of the Southland's top teams, 81-77.  Earlier this season the Colonels defeated the Cardinals in Thibodaux 78-67.

Cassidy Barrios leads Nicholls in scoring at 15.5 a contest and 7.6 rebounds.  Hope Pawlowski is also averaging double figures at 11.6 and contest.

Nicholls is second in the conference in free throw percentage (.765), second in steals per game (14.3), and second in turnover margin (+7.2).

"This is not the game to be taken lightly at all.  They are going to come out swinging because it's their final home game of the year and they want to go into the tournament on a roll," said Davenport.

New Orleans leads the all-time series with the Colonels, 25-16.

New Orleans will head to Katy, Texas for the Southland Conference Tournament Mar. 10-13.   For tickets to  Privateer Athletics events, contact the UNO Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 280-GAME (4263) or via the Internet by clicking HERE.
