Men's Tennis Withstands Hornets' Sting In 4-3 Victory

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's tennis team took on Alabama State on Monday, besting the hosts 4-3 to finish their two-match road swing with a 1-1 record.

Juniors Federico Boscarino and Federico Staksrud led the Privateers (4-2) with victories on the second and third singles positions via 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2 scores, while pairing up for a 6-0 outing at the second doubles flight.

"[Federico] Boscarino and [Federico] Staksrud are playing great tennis right now," head coach Burzis Kanga said. They play great together in doubles and have been looking equally as impressive on their own in singles play. We have to work on our other two doubles pairings. We have given up the doubles point the past three games which puts more pressure on us in singles."

New Orleans led Alabama State (4-10) in all three doubles matches, but gave up late leads to the Hornets on courts one and three to lose both 7-6.

Staksrud was the first match to end, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 victory for junior Giacomo Adoncecchi at the sixth position to put the Privateers up 2-1 overall. Boscarino put UNO one game away from the match victory with his straight-set triumph on court two, with senior Luis Albuquerque prevailed 7-6 in the first set of his match at the fifth flight with a 6-1 follow up in the second to clinch the win.

Sophomore Nicolas Kramer played at the fourth position for New Orleans, losing 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Jeffrey Hsu led his Alabama State counterpart 6-2, 5-4 before retiring.

UNO is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 7 when they host the College of Charleston at 2 p.m.
