Volleyball Looks To Bounce Back At UAB Invitational

Privateers work toward first weekend sweep

NEW ORLEANS The University of New Orleans volleyball team will embark on its third consecutive road-trip when they head to Birmingham, Alabama for the Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational, Friday and Saturday, September 15-16.  The University of Alabama-Birmingham serves as tournament host.

New Orleans will face Western Carolina (3-7), Mississippi Valley State (1-9) and host school Alabama-Birmingham (3-8).  The Privateers will face Western Carolina Friday at 10 pm.  Seven hours later, at 5 pm, it's Mississippi Valley and on Saturday UNO faces host UAB at 2 pm.

New Orleans (5-4) went 1-2 last weekend at the North Texas Challenge in Denton, Texas.  The Privateers won a five-set match over Campbell University and dropped outings to Oregon State and the University of North Texas.

"Our goal coming out of this preseason was to at least get to the .500 mark of the 12 matches…giving us a better catapult than we got last year from our preseason," said head coach Millicent Van Norden. "We are an arms-length away from exceeding our expectations."

Junior middle blocker Kaitlyn Grice leads the Southland Conference (SLC) in total blocks (50) and blocks per set (1.35).  The Valrico, Florida native was named to the New Orleans Invitational and Tennessee State Invitational all-tournament teams.

Lane Hindenburg, a junior from Palatine, Illinois followed her strong play two weekends ago at the Tennessee State Invitational by earning all-tournament recognition at the North Texas Challenge.  Hindenburg had 15 kills, 4 service aces and 4 blocks in New Orleans' five-set win over Campbell University.

The Privateers next home game will be the SLC opener versus University of the Incarnate Word, Thursday, September 21, 6:30 p. m. at the Human Performance Center.
