New Orleans-The University of New Orleans women's basketball team hopes to reach the 500 mark in Southland Conference play when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-6, 2-2 SLC) comes to town, Saturday, January 13 at Lakefront Arena.
Tipoff is 2 p. m. and is part of a doubleheader which includes the men's contest between the UNO men and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4:15 p. m.
New Orleans (6-10, 2-3 SLC) lost a tough one at home Wednesday night to Stephen F. Austin, 74-67 despite 28 points by the nation's sixth leading scorer,
Randi Brown.
The Houma, Louisiana senior is the Southland Conference's leader in points (367) and points per game (22.9). She ranks second in the Southland in three-pointers with 47 and is fourth in steals with 42 in 16 games.
Guard
Kayla Mundy reached double-figures for the fifth consecutive game with 14 points against Stephen F. Austin. The senior is averaging 10.6 a game with her season and career-high of 25 points coming in the win over McNeese on January 6 in Lake Charles.
Center
Shania Woods is one of the best rebounders in the SLC ranking 3rd in that department with 7.8 rebounds a contest. The Houston, Texas native has recorded five double-doubles this season and averages 10.6 points an outing.
The Privateers continue to lead the conference in free throw shooting knocking down 245-of-321 for a percentage of .763. Individually, Mundy ranks second in the Southland Conference hitting .867 (39-of-45) and
Randi Brown ranks fourth at .847 (94-of-111).
The Islanders come to town after back-to-back road wins in conference over Northwestern State and Sam Houston State. In the win over Sam Houston, Brittany Mbamalu had 23 points and surpassed the 1-thousand-point plateau for her career. The junior leads Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in scoring (11.8) along with Daleshia Booth (11.4) and Emma Young (10.5) who is the club's top rebounder with 6.8 rebounds a game.
The Islanders are one of the top defensive teams in the Southland yielding only 55.7 points a game and head coach
Keeshawn Davenport thinks her team will bounce back against the Islanders.
"I'm going to remind them that I have a bitter taste in my mouth about Katy. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was the one that sent us home. That's enough to fuel me to get a win Saturday and I hope it fuels the team as well"
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi eliminated the Privateers from last year's Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas with an 88-77 quarterfinal win.
