New Orleans- Facing perhaps the toughest test of the conference season thus far, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team heads to Conway, Arkansas to face the defending Southland Conference Champions the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), Wednesday, January 17. Tip off is 7 p. m.
The Privateers (7-10, 3-3 SLC) turned in their best defensive performance of the season in a 66-49 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their last outing. New Orleans limited the Islanders to 29 percent shooting (17-of-61).
For the 12th time this season,
Randi Brown exceeded 20-points with a 29-point performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The senior is the nation's fifth-leading scorer averaging 23.3 a game and she also leads the Southland Conference in scoring.
From Houma, Louisiana, Brown has averaged 25.7 in six conference games. She also ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.856) and fourth in steals (.2.5). Brown has failed to reach double figures only once in 17 contests.
Guard
Kayla Mundy ran her double figure scoring streak to six with 12 points against A&M-CC. A McKinney, Texas native, Mundy scores 10.7 in all games and 17-points in conference games. Hitting over 85 percent of her free throws, she ranks third in the Southland Conference in that category.
Junior center
Shania Woods has recorded six double-doubles (points and rebounds) this season---the latest coming in the Privateers' last game with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Woods is one of the top rebounders in the SLC ranking third at 7.9 a game.
UNO continues to pace the league in free throw shooting as a team at .771 canning 263-of-341.
Central Arkansas (13-4, 6-0 SLC) is the two-time defending Southland Conference Tournament Champions. The Sugar Bears are currently in the midst of an 8-game win streak. Defense is UCA's calling card, holding opponents to 48.0 points a contest.
Kamry Orr leads Central Arkansas in scoring at 15.1 a game. The junior was named player of the week in the Southland Conference for the week ending January 15 after scoring 27-points against Incarnate Word and 32-points against Nicholls.
Taylor Baudion averages 14.3 a game and grabs 6.9 rebounds. She's is a .523 shooter from the field.
The next time New Orleans will take the court is Saturday, January 20, at Lakefront Arena when Incarnate Word comes to New Orleans. The 4 p. m. game is part of a special doubleheader billed as "Load The Lakefront", an effort to get fans and alumni to fill Lakefront Arena. The men's game will follow at approximately 6:15. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
