NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans will open the 2018 spring campaign at the University Tennis Center hosting the University of Miami Friday at 6 p.m.
Â
Of the first six matches this spring, five will be at home for the Privateers. Friday also marks the first of three matches against a power five school.
Â
"I think this is a good opportunity to get our feet wet against a good team in Miami," said head coach
Burzis Kanga. "The biggest key for us is going to be chemistry in doubles."
Â
The Privateers were 7-13 a year ago and were bounced in the first round of the Southland Tournament, but dealt with injury issues during the season. This year, New Orleans starts the season with seven players including three returners:
Giacomo Adoncecchi,
Federico Boscarino, and
Nicolas Kramer.
Â
UNO participated in two tournaments in the fall: the Big Easy Classic, which was shortened by rain and the ITA Southern Regional.
Â
"The four, five and six positions will be critical," said Kanga. I was encouraged by
Alexis (
Guedy),
Johannes (
Klein), and Nicolas. Federico will have to step up in place of
Jeffrey Hsu."
Â
Miami had a busy fall, participating in five tournaments and two other fall tourneys were canceled. The Canes are under the guidance of Aljosa Piric, who begins his second season in Miami.
Â
In Piric's debut season with the Hurricanes, they went 9-13 and 2-9 in the ACC. Miami returns five players from last season. Among those is Piotr Lomacki who finished 12-9 in singles as a junior while playing at the top spot in the rotation. Lomacki ended the season ranked 63
rd in singles and was second team all-ACC.
Â
Entering the spring, Bojan Jankulovski is ranked No. 71 in singles and Christian Langmo is No. 78 (ITA).
