Track And Field Heads To Birmingham For Samford Open Invite

Privateers look to build on strong performances in Arkansas

Birmingham, Alabama- The University of New Orleans track and field teams continue the indoor season in Birmingham, Alabama, Friday and Saturday, January 19-20, at the Samford Open and Invitational.  The meet will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Thirty-nine Privateer student-athletes are entered in the third indoor meet of the season.  21 men and 18 women will compete against some of the top collegiate and unattached athletes in the nation.  The Privateers will be joined by fellow Southland Conference schools Central Arkansas, McNeese and Nicholls in Birmingham.

At last week's Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, freshman Trenton Anderson turned in an encouraging effort in the 600-meters (1:26.24) and the 800-meters (2:04.44).  He's entered in the 800 this week.

Another freshman, Harrison Coleman of New Orleans, turned in a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8:43.  The Edna Karr High School product will look for continued improvement on that mark.

Sprinter/Jumper Michael Strong will compete in the long jump and triple jump in Birmingham.  Last week in Fayetteville he was second in the long jump competition with a leap of 23 feet.

In the throws, senior Kahoa Mikaele will compete in the weight throw and the shot put this week after setting a personal record in Arkansas in the weight throw.  She'll be joined in the weight throw by Emma Hickman and Elly Johnson.

Farydah Inoussa will have another busy weekend as she prepares to defend her pentathlon title in the Southland Conference.  The graduate student is set to go in the 60-meter hurdles, shot put and the long jump.

Live results of the Samford Open and Invitational will be available on our website www.unoprivateers.com.

The Privateers will return to Birmingham, Alabama next week for the KMS Invitational, Sunday January 28 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
