NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans sprint group continued its strong start to the outdoor season with standout performances at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational over the past few days.
TEXAS RELAYS
The University of New Orleans sprinters once again had a strong showing on one of college track and field's biggest stages — the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Yoran Kabengele-Kabala finished 12th overall with a new personal best in the 100M (Uni/Coll) dash. His time of 10.197 ranked No. 13 in the NCAA at the conclusion of the race and No. 1 in the Southland Conference this season — just ahead of Kalen Beavers of Northwestern State, who ran 10.20 at the Louisiana Classic two weeks ago. Kabengele-Kabala's mark is the 16th fastest in UNO history and fifth on the school's all-time performance list.
Olamipo Ladipo also had a strong in the 100M (UC Timed) dash. Ladipo set a new personal best of 10.34 and finished in fifth place. His time ranks No. 26 in the NCAA this season and third in the Southland Conference. The freshman now sits eighth on UNO's all-time performance list.
Tshilidzi Netshiombo also posted a personal best in the same event, finishing in 10.69.
Kabengele-Kabala, Ladipo,
Daryl Bachmann, and
Keldrick Turner also excelled in the 4x100-meter relay in Austin. The foursome finished in 39.80 - the 29th fastest time in the NCAA this season and the 10th fastest in school history. Their time was faster than Texas' A squad, Baylor, and TCU. Three of UNO's top-10 4x100M relay times in program history have been set at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
BOBCAT INVITATIONAL
After a strong performance in Austin, Turner traveled to San Marcos, Texas, and continued to impress.
The graduate student set a new lifetime personal best — his first personal best anywhere in over three years — and broke the UNO school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 40.46 on Saturday afternoon. The previous school record, 47.15 seconds, had been set by Henry Green at the 1994 Sun Belt Championships 32 years ago. Turner's mark ranks No. 19 in the NCAA this season and No. 1 in the Southland Conference.
Ladipo, Turner, and Kabengele-Kabala also posted top-100 times in the NCAA in the 200 meters on Saturday. Ladipo finished fourth in 20.76 seconds, Turner was fifth in 20.84, and Kabengele-Kabala placed ninth in 21.049 seconds.
Those times rank No. 24, 35, and 81 in the NCAA this season, continuing a strong year for the USTFCCCA's No. 10 200-meter group. Ladipo's time is the seventh fastest in school history and ranks third on UNO's all-time performance list. Turner's time is the 11th fastest in school history and ranks sixth on UNO's all-time performance list.
