New Orleans - The University of New Orleans women's basketball team is on a roll!
When the Lady Demons of Northwestern State come to Lakefront Arena, Wednesday, January 24, the Privateers will try to extend their win-streak to four and a victory would move their overall record to the .500 mark for the second time this season. Tipoff for the tilt against the visitors from Natchitoches is 7 p. m.
The last time New Orleans (9-10, 5-3 SLC) was at the .500 mark overall was the second game of the season, 1-1, after a win over CSUN in the Preseason WNIT, 76-73 on November 17, 2017.
"Three wins in a row right now is a good place to be at this part of conference," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "I like our focus and our intensity and we're starting to show signs of being a good team. We're getting there."
The last time UNO won four consecutive games was the end of the 2014-2015 season with wins over conference foes Nicholls, Abilene Christian, Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State.
In their last outing, the Privateers defeated UIW thanks to a
Randi Brown 12-footer with 3.2 seconds remaining in a 52-50 win.
Brown continues to lead the Southland Conference (SLC) in scoring at 22.5 points a game and she's currently 10
th in the nation in scoring. The Houma, Louisiana senior is fourth in the conference in free throw shooting (116-of-136) .853.
Junior center
Shania Woods continues her solid play averaging 10.5 points a contest and is the fifth best rebounder in the conference with 8.2 a game. The Houston, Texas native has six double doubles (points and rebounds) this season.
Kayla Mundy, a senior guard, has reached double figures in 7 of the last 8 games, including a season and career best 25 points in a road-win against the McNeese Cowgirls. Mundy is scoring at a 10.4 clip and has been red-hot all season from the charity stripe hitting 44-of-52 (.846).
Northwestern State (6-12, 1-6 SLC) will be led by junior Nautica Grant averaging 11.7 points and Libba Gilliam (10.3 pts.). Gilliam leads the SLC in free throw shooting hitting a perfect 37-of-37 for the season.
The Lady Demons and the Privateers are tops in the Southland in defending the 3-point shot. Northwestern State ranks first holding opponents to .286 while the Privateers are second in that category at .288.
The last time the Privateers faced the Lady Demons was February 25, 2017 in Natchitoches. Despite 35 points from
Randi Brown, Northwestern State defeated the Privateers 95-93.
Next up for the Privateers, a trip to San Antonio, Texas to face UIW, Saturday, January 27. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
