New Orleans -Â The University of New Orleans women's basketball team closes a short conference road swing, Saturday, January 6 when they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana to face the McNeese Cowgirls at Burton Coliseum. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
New Orleans (5-9, 1-2 SLC) enter the game with the nation's fifth-leading scorer and two players coming off career-high performances.
Guard
Randi Brown, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference, averages 23 points a game after canning 28 points against Lamar on January 3. The senior has moved up to fifth among NCAA Division I scorers. Brown has exceeded 25 points in six consecutive games.
The Houma, Louisiana native is second in the conference in 3 pointers made (40) and fourth in free throw percentage (.848). She also had 7 steals against Lamar.
Her backcourt mate,
Kayla Mundy, turned in a career-high in points against Lamar with 21. The McKinney, Texas senior averages 9.4 points a game and ranks third in the Southland Conference in free throw shooting at .861. Mundy also collected 6 rebounds.
Sophomore post player
Whitley Larry recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds. At 6-1, Larry, from Rayne, Louisiana also blocked 2 shots.
After shooting 92.6 percent from the free throw line (25-of-27) versus Lamar, New Orleans leads the SLC in free throw shooting at .763.
McNeese (6-8, 2-1 SLC) is led in scoring by Caitlin Davis at 11.6 a contest. However, the Cowgirls' strength may be rebounding, leading the conference in that category at 42.2 rebounds a game.
The Cowgirls have 3 players pulling down 6 a contest, Bre'Ashlee  Jones (6.5), Jasmyn Carswell (6.2) and Mercedes Rogers (6.1).
"We are going to have to really hone in on boxing out because they are really good on the boards," says head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "We just can't allow them to get second chance opportunities."
The game between the Privateers and the Cowgirls is part of a Southland Conference doubleheader as the New Orleans and McNeese men's teams will play after the women's contest at 3:30 p. m.
The Privateers continue Southland Conference competition, at home in Lakefront Arena, Wednesday, January 10 against the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin. Tipoff is 7 p. m.
