New Orleans- Fresh off a win on the road over McNeese, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team braces for an invasion by one of the Southland Conference's hottest teams when Stephen F. Austin comes to Lakefront Arena, Wednesday, January 10. Tipoff is 7 p. m.
New Orleans (6-9, 2-2 SLC) used a 23-4 third quarter to defeat the McNeese Cowgirls, 77-64 in their last outing. Stephen F. Austin (11-3, 3-0 SLC) is in the midst of a four-game winning streak after getting by Northwestern State, 70-62 last Saturday.
Senior
Kayla Mundy led the way for the Privateers against McNeese with a career-high 25 points. The McKinney, Texas native has recorded back-to-back career bests in scoring. She had 21 points against Lamar on January 3. Mundy has been deadly from the free throw line hitting 34-of-39 on the year---.872, ranking second in the Southland Conference.
UNO features one of the nation's leading scorers in senior
Randi Brown. Averaging 22.6 points a game, she ranks eighth in the nation and continues to lead the Southland Conference. UNO's number two all-time scorer is second in the SLC in 3-pointers (2.9), fourth in steals (2.6) and fourth in free throw shooting (.850).
With 14 points and 14 rebounds versus McNeese,
Shania Woods has five double-doubles this season. The junior averages 11 points and 8 rebounds with a season-high 19 rebounds coming against Houston earlier this season.
As a team the Privateers are tops in the SLC in free throw shooting, 225-of-294 (.765).
Stephen F. Austin is led by Stevi Parker, the conference leader in rebounding, with 10.2 a contest and she averages 11.6 points a game.
Chanell Hayes, a junior guard leads the Ladyjacks in scoring at 11.7 a game.
SFA sits near or at the top of most statistical categories---number one is assists (16.4), second in scoring offense (77.8), third in scoring defense (57.5) and margin of victory (+20.6).
"If we can continue to let defense be our focus we'll be all right the rest of this conference season," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "It's really a simple game. Take care of the ball and box out. When we do that we're successful."
New Orleans will return to the court Saturday, January 13 when Texas A and M-Corpus Christi comes to Lakefront Arena for a 2 p. m. date. It's part of a doubleheader as men's teams from UNO and Texas A and M-Corpus Christi will meet following the women's game at 4:15.
