New Orleans - After a long break, the New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (0-1) returns to the court Friday when they host local foe, Loyola on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
The Privateers suffered a tough loss to open their spring campaign against an ACC foe when they were defeated 4-0 by Miami. Though UNO was shut out on the evening, the team was competitive in some spots during the match. The number one doubles tandem of
Alexis Guedy and
Christian Fjeldstad eyeballed the Hurricanes' top pair.
In singles,
Federico Boscarino had a one-set lead over Christian Langmo who is ranked 73
rd by ITA in singles. Guedy took his first set to a tiebreak and was level at 1-1 at the number three spot.
Lorenzo Camilli also forced a long second set that went to 6-5 when the match was decided.
"They're anxious and ready to play," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "They know they're going to have to execute to win this match. Federico (Boscarino) is playing really well and I'm looking for him to lead this team forward."
The Wolfpack (0-1) have shown steady improvement under now fourth year coach, Kyle Russell. Loyola has won 16 matches over the last two spring campaigns. In their previous three seasons, they were held to just 11 wins.
Loyola also garnered some national recognition, receiving votes in the preseason NAIA poll. Loyola had a tough season opener in their own right, losing 6-3 to Xavier (La.) who is ranked second in NAIA.
It's a mix of new blood and returners who contributed heavily to last year's continued improvement for Loyola. The Wolfpack have five newcomers (four freshmen and one sophomore transfer), but they also return four from last year. That includes Ernesto de Diego, who was an all-conference player last season for the Wolfpack.
