Hammond, Louisiana- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team (14-14, 10-7 SLC) will close the regular season on the road, in Hammond, Louisiana against the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (8-19 7-9 SLC), Wednesday, February 28 at the University Center. Tipoff is 7 p. m.
The Privateers, assured of a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament, are currently in 5th place in the Southland Conference after falling on the road to Nicholls last Saturday, 72-48. Wednesday's game is especially important to Southeastern because they are tied with McNeese for the eighth and final postseason berth.
"That's why they (SLU) are playing so well," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. They are playing with purpose and that's why I've tried to get them (UNO) to understand we are not in Katy, yet. Saturday we will be in Hammond and I've tried to get them to focus.  Even though we've clinched a sport, we need to get the best spot."
The last time UNO met SLU was February 14, in New Orleans, an 82-73 Privateer win as New Orleans had three players in double figures,
Randi Brown with 32,
Kayla Mundy with 19 and
Shania Woods with 18 and 13 rebounds.
Randi Brown continues to lead the Southland Conference in scoring netting 21.6 points a game. Brown leads in total points with 606 points on the season. She now has 2,076 career-points and is 5th on the all-time Southland Conference scoring list.
The product of Central Catholic High School in Morgan City ranks 4th in the conference in steals with 2.6 a game and she has been torrid from the free throw line hitting 83.7% of her free throws.
Senior guard
Kayla Mundy is scoring at an 11.1 clip and is one of the best in the league in free throw shooting hitting 86.1 of her charity shots good enough for fourth in the conference.
Houston, Texas native
Shania Woods ranks 4th in the SLC in rebounding at 8.6, 3rd in field goal percentage (50.4%) and averages 12.1 points a game. The senior center has 11 double-doubles this season, that's at least 10-points and 10-rebounds in 11 games this season, second only to Cassidy Barrios of Nicholls.
New Orleans continues to lead in free throw shooting as a team hitting 75% of their shots. (402-of-536). The Privateers are second in defending the 3-point shot holding opponents to 28.4 percent.
"We have things to play for," said Davenport. "15-14 will be our first winning season again since 2001. 11 wins in conference will be the most wins we've had since we've been in the Southland. So we're still pushing for other things even though we know we're going to Katy."
Southeastern Louisiana is led by Taylin Underwood. The senior averages 18.1 points a contest and leads the Southland in 3-pointers made with 82.
Caitlin Williams is the Lady Lions rebounding leader pulling down 7.5 an outing.
SLC closes its regular season Saturday, March 3 at home against Nicholls.
The next time the Privateers hit the floor will be the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas March 8-11.
