New Orleans- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will try to snap a two-game losing streak, on the road, Saturday, February 10, when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-8, 7-4 Southland). Tipoff is 2 p. m.
New Orleans (11-12, 7-5 Southland) dropped a heartbreaker to Nicholls the last time out, 62-61. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has a four-game winning streak after defeating Sam Houston State, 62-48 in its last outing.
"Losing two games by only six points does not sit well," said head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "we've had really good practices and we realize the importance of every game and we're looking to get back on the right track."
The Privateers, currently in sixth-place in Southland Conference standings, will rely on the leading scorer in the Southland Conference in
Randi Brown averaging 20.9 points a game. The senior guard is 49 points shy of becoming the second player in Privateer history to reach the 2,000-point plateau, joining UNO All-American Sandra Hodge (1980-84). Brown is currently at 1,951 points for her career.
Brown needs 17 points to move into 8
th place all-time among scorers in Southland Conference history passing Kalis Loyd of Lamar (2009-13).
Shania Woods, a senior center from Houston, Texas, averages 11.6 points per contest and is among the best in the conference in field goal percentage, 102-of-210 (.486). Woods is fourth in the league in rebounding at 8.5 a game. Her 17-point, 12-rebound performance in the loss to Nicholls was her 9th double-double of the season---good enough for second in the league in that category.
Senior guard
Kayla Mundy has reached double figures in scoring in 10 of the last 12 games, including a career-high 25 in a road win over McNeese on 1-6-18. The McKinney, Texas native averages 10.7 points a game.
New Orleans continues to lead the Southland in team free throw shooting at .758 (329-of-434). individually,
Kayla Mundy is second in the league in free throws hitting 54-of-62 (.871) and
Randi Brown is fourth canning 127-of-151 (.841).
The Islanders have three double-figure scorers led by Brittany Mbamalu at 11.7 a contest. Sophomore Emma Young (who did not play in the first game in New Orleans) averages 10.6 while Dalesia Booth, a sophomore is scoring at a 10.0 clip.
As a team they are tops in the Southland Conference in rebound margin (+5.1) and second in scoring defense (55.7).
"They're a very different team and a team that's peaking at the right time. I expect a different game from the first one but we are going to Corpus Christi to compete. With them being 7-4 and we're 7-5, we're all vying for these sports in Katy (Southland Conference Tournament)."
UNO defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first meeting of the season, 66-49, in New Orleans on 1-13-18.Â
Randi Brown led New Orleans with 29 points.
After Saturday's road trip to Corpus-Christi, UNO returns home, Wednesday, January 14 when they host Southeastern Louisiana at Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is 7 p. m.
