New Orleans - The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (4-4) will travel to Mobile on Thursday to take on the South Alabama Jaguars. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
New Orleans went 1-1 in a pair of matches last week. The Privateers swept singles in a 6-1 victory over Belmont last Tuesday. On Sunday, the Privateers fell 5-2 to a familiar foe in the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
"Our schedule is very strong this year but I think having said that, this is another team in South Alabama that we look forward to the challenge against," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "We're only going to get better from this match and we're trying to prepare for conference. This won't be easy, but I think we have players who can compete."
This match is one of the rained out matches New Orleans dealt with in February. The men and women were supposed to both play in Mobile in early February, but rain postponed both matches. The women already made up their bout against South Alabama with a venue change to the University Tennis Center.
With the rotation shuffled against the Cajuns, New Orleans got a couple of strong performances.
Alexis Guedy is 5-1 in singles this season after playing at number three for the first time this season on Sunday. One constant has been
Federico Boscarino who is 4-0 in singles at the top slot. In doubles, Boscarino and
Christian Fjeldstad played together at number one for the first time this season and pushed the Cajuns' top pair to a 4-4 tie.
To date, the schedule has been home heavy for the Privateers. Their only two matches away from New Orleans were when they went 0-2 in Tallahassee against Liberty and Florida State. Including Thursday, the Privaters have 10 matches remaining. Five of them are on the road.
South Alabama (8-5) has already dismissed two Southland opponents. The Jaguars beat Lamar 6-1 on Feb. 13. They followed with a 4-3 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the HEB Invitational.
Loic Cloes has starred for the Jaguars in singles to the tune of a 12-0 record. Cloes has played four matches at the top spot and eight at number two singles. Clement Marzol has also put together a strong spring with a 7-1 overall mark in singles. Cloes and Marzol have combined to form a tough doubles pair with a 7-1 record this spring.
