Men's Tennis Suffers Tough Loss to Nicholls

Box Score Thibodaux, La. - The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (4-6, 0-1) fell just short in their closest match of the season, falling 4-3 to the Nicholls Colonels on Wednesday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

Trailing 3-2, Nicholls (3-7, 1-1) rallied to win the last two singles matches at flight one and four to earn their first victory over the Privateers since 2014. Oleksander Podgursky outlasted Federico Boscarino in a straight set victory, but both sets went to tiebreakers.

"We're going to readjust in doubles," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "This loss was a tough one to take and it puts us in a difficult spot."

The clinching point was earned when Lewis Cox rallied from losing the first set to Nicolas Kramer. The third and deciding set went down to the wire with Cox winning 7-5 to give the Colonels the victory.

Nicholls got out the gate strong with a convincing win in doubles. Nicholls grabbed a 6-0 win at flight one and a 6-2 decision at flight two and sealed the first point in their favor. The match at flight three was tied 3-3.

The Privateers rallied back for a 2-1 lead in the match after taking the first two singles decisions to finish. Johannes Klein coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win at flight three. Alexis Guedy followed with a 6-4,6-4 win of his own.

The two sides traded the next two matches and the Privateers maintained a 3-2 lead. Nestor Girbiet Lopez rallied from a set down to take the match at flight six. Giacomo Adoncecchi responded with a straight set win at flight five for New Orleans.

New Orleans will return home on Friday, Mar. 23 to take on Lamar at 3 p.m.
