CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The University of New Orleans will be at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center tomorrow to take on Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The women (8-7, 2-4 Southland) face the Islanders (9-6, 4-1 Southland) at 11 a.m. with the Privateer men (4-8, 0-3 Southland) battling the 'Ders (16-7, 1-0 Southland) at 2 p.m.
WOMEN
The women's team looks to bounce back from a tough 4-3 loss at home to Abilene Christian in their last outing. The loss dropped the Privateers to 2-4 in conference play with five matches remaining. Four of those five will be on the road.
Anja Luethi has put together a fantastic individual season and has run her singles winning streak to six. The senior is 12-2 in singles on the season. Last Saturday, Luethi handed Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian her first conference singles loss this year.
Mar Gendra returned to the lineup and has won both of her singles matches against opponents from Nicholls and Abilene Christian. Gendra is 6-4 on the season in singles. The freshman was paired with
Brittany Johnson in doubles for the first time against Abilene Christian.
The Islanders are in a comfortable spot in the Southland standings at 4-1. Heading into the weekend, the Islanders stand third behind Northwestern State and McNeese. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi also has an unblemished record at home (6-0).
Maria Maldonado has helped lead the charge for the No. 9 (regionally) Islanders. Maldonado was 18-3 for the Islanders in singles a season ago. Hortense Boscher was named a captain of the squad and has played at the top flight. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is the defending Southland Conference champion.
MEN
The Privateers are poised to end a five-match losing skid against the Islanders. With five regular season matches remaining and one Southland contest following Friday's bout on the island, UNO is led by
Alexis Guedy's 7-3 mark. Guedy is 5-2 at No. 2.
Giacomo Adoncecchi is 6-6 (5-3 at No. 5), and
Federico Boscarino and
Johannes Klein have five singles wins apiece.
As a duo, Guedy and Klein have three total wins.
Kevin Bettendroffer is 12-6 at No. 1 for the 'Ders but William Mottet leads the club with 15 total singles victories (11-2 at No. 3). Paul Cook is 11-2 overall with wins in his last seven matches. In doubles play, Bettendroffer and Mottet are 12-6 in the top spot.
NEXT UP
The clubs remain in South Texas and head to San Antonio to face the University of the Incarnate Word Monday.
