New Orleans - The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (4-9, 0-4) will close down their Southland slate on Monday when they face the Incarnate Word Cardinals. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Mabry Tennis Center.
New Orleans comes into the match on a six-game losing streak after falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1 on Saturday. The Privateers will miss out on the Southland Tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
Heading into the last conference match,
Giacomo Adoncecchi and
Alexis Guedy co-lead the squad in conference singles wins with two each. Guedy has put together a 7-4 season in singles during his freshman campaign while playing mostly at flight two. Adoncecchi by contrast is in his final season on the Lakefront.
The Privateers are 3-1 against the Cardinals since entering the Southland four years ago. Incarnate Word's only victory in that span was back in 2014. However, the last two years' match-ups between these two sides have produced some pulsating moments. New Orleans has won by a 4-3 margin in each of the last two years. Last year,
Federico Boscarino earned the clinching point against Incarnate Word after rallying back from down a set.
The Cardinals (7-9, 1-0) by contrast have just gotten their Southland slate started. Their only conference match was a 5-2 win over Nicholls on Mar. 24. Incarnate Word will play their remaining four Southland foes over the next 12 days.
Incarnate Word has been led this spring in singles by Francisco Bendana who won nine of his first 12 singles matches this spring. Bendana has alternated between the top three flights this year. The Cardinals last played on Mar. 29 when they lost both ends of a doubleheader to 24
th-ranked Baylor in Waco (5-2, 7-0).
