JACKSON, Miss. – Beau Bratton extended his hit streak to nine and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Owen Magee collected two doubles in the University of New Orleans' (17-21) 7-4 loss to Jackson State University (24-13) Tuesday evening at Robert "Bob" Braddy, Sr. Field.
Magee moved up to the No. 2 hole in the lineup and picked up two hits and a run and Bratton followed Magee in the lineup with two base hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers struck first on a two-out solo shot by Lamar Briggs.
In the second,
Jacob McFadden walked and forced an errant throw to third on
Darren Willis' groundout but the play was overturned and called foul, sending the designated hitter back to second.
In the bottom frame, infield singles and an error made the JSU lead 3-0. The Tigers tacked on a run in the fourth on the club's fourth infield single.
After a pitching change to begin the fourth, the Privateers were patient at the plate, drawing two walks and running the count full on two occasions following
Orynn Veillon's infield single.
Devin Morrill's sacrifice fly brought home Veillon to give UNO its first run of the game but Garth Cahill, who entered with the bases juiced and no outs, limited the damage as we went to the bottom half of the inning.
Back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth by
Collin Morrill and Magee brought the tying run to the plate. Bratton was hit and that was all for Cahill as JSU summoned a new pitcher with runners on first and second and no outs.
Pearce Howard drove in Magee on a single up the middle to make it a one-run ballgame.
Entering his third inning of work,
William Griffin shut out the Tigers but Jackson State was able to add two runs in the sixth for a 6-3 cushion.
Zach Thompson entered and punched out the two batters to end the inning.
In the eighth, JSU made it a three-run game.
The Privateers stranded 13 runners.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Kyle Arjona (2-3) suffered from tough luck in the midweek start as the Tigers found the right spots with four infield singles. The right-hander went 3.0 innings and all four runs (three earned) scored with two outs.
A
Devin Morrill leadoff walk forced another pitching change and the Tigers brought in their right fielder Robert Perteet with a 4-3 lead. The southpaw induced a grounder but a fielding error moved
Jay Robinson to scoring position. Back-to-back hit by pitches loaded the bases. Perteet faced the left-handed hitting Bratton and was followed by closer Jose Tirado, who entered with nine saves.
Mikale Galatas (8-1) allowed two hits in 3.0 innings. Tirado remained in the game and picked up his 10
th save in 3.1 innings of work.
Jacob Kelley made his Privateer debut after redshirting last season and tossed a scoreless seventh.
