SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A freshman scoring twice, a trip to the podium for a graduate student and another school record performance by a junior were the highlights for the University of New Orleans track and field teams on the final day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word Sunday.
The women placed 11
th with 10 points and the men finished 12
th with nine.
Harrison Coleman scored all nine UNO points on the day with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.61 seconds) and crossed the finish line in 53.60 ticks in the 400-meter hurdles, good for fourth.
"I'm so proud of Harrison," said interim head track and field coach
Adam Carlisle. "He ran a really good hurdles race. Scoring twice is huge and as a freshman shows that he can continue to improve and find himself on the podium in the future. He put himself up there with some of the best hurdlers in our conference."
She returned to the club this season and capped off a sensational campaign with a personal best 5-7.75 (1.72m) mark in the high jump to earn six points and a third-place finish. Adeola was a fourth-place finisher at the Southland Conference Championships in 2015.
"We knew she would do well but I'm not sure we expected her to medal," said Carlisle. "What a great accomplishment in her final collegiate race. She had an extra year of eligibility and to see her cap off with a personal record was a great thing. That's a good way to leave a track and field program."
Kahoa Mikaele broke her own school record in the discus with a toss of 156-8.0 (47.75m), smashing the standard she set last month at the Tiger Relays in Auburn, Alabama by eight inches. The junior finished seventh and picked up two points.
"She's been a staple for us all year so it's not surprising to see her score points," said Carlisle. "It was a great experience for her and I'm sure she'll come back next year and do even better."
In the heptathlon,
Farydah Inoussa earned two point with a seventh-place finish. The 2017 conference pentathlon champ collected a total of 4,883 points in the combined events.
