LEXINGTON – Keldrick Turner became the latest University of New Orleans student-athlete to reach an NCAA regional quarterfinal after a veteran performance during the 400-meter dash on Wednesday evening.
Turner automatically qualified for Friday's quarterfinals after finishing third in his heat ahead of Mississippi State's Malachi Burton, Ohio State's Noah Carmichael, Clemson's Grant Holliday, Ohio State's Mason Louis and South Carolina's Josiah Wrice. His time of 45.854 ranked 24th among the 48 competitors Wednesday.
He now owns the top four 400-meter times in program history, and his preliminary time was just the second mark under 46 seconds in UNO history. He also owns two of the Southland Conference's four 400-meter times under 46 seconds this season. William Achee and Charlie Bartholomew, both of Northwestern State University, have the other two.
Yoran Kabengele-Kabala finished eighth in his heat and 44th overall with a time of 10.54 in the 100-meter preliminaries. The freshman will get his second crack at the NCAA East Regional on Friday evening as part of UNO's 4x100-meter relay squad.
