Volleyball Opens 2018 Season with UNO Invitational

NEW ORLEANS – The Human Performance Center will be the site of the University of New Orleans 2018 season opener as the Privateers host the UNO Invitational August 24-25. New Orleans begins the tournament with a noon battle versus the University of Nebraska Omaha and the University of Houston at 7 p.m. On day two, the Privateers conclude the invite welcoming Murray State University at 5 p.m.

SCOUTING THE TEAMS
NEW ORLEANS
Seniors Blessing Dunn and Kaitlyn Grice are back for the Blue and Silver after leading the club in kills, aces, blocks and hitting percentage. Dunn finished 2017 with 244 kills and 24 service aces and Grice anchored the defense with 132 total blocks, second most in the Southland Conference. Her .339 hitting percentage was tops in the SLC. Andrea Nava collected 284 digs and 18 aces last season and returns for her junior campaign.
 
HOUSTON
Last season, the Cougars led the American Athletic Conference in serving, tallying 1.55 aces per set (No. 29 in NCAA Division I). Juniors Megan Duncan and Katie Karbo highlight UH's returning players as the duo averaged 2.68 kills and 5.29 digs, respectively.
 
MURRAY STATE
The Racers have 12 players returning from last year's team. Rachel Giustino, Rachel Holthaus, and Katirah Johnson were named to the 2018 All-OVC Preseason team. Guistino led the team in kills last season with 469, Holthaus was third with 242, and Johnson was fifth with 151.
 
NEBRASKA-OMAHA
The Mavs return four starters from last year – seniors Abby Bergsten, Mackenzie Horkey, and sophomores Anne Blaschko, Abigayle Meyer. Bergsten (226) and Horkey (212) were first and second, respectively, on the team in kills. Blaschko added 205 of her own, and Meyer had 20 in limited starts.
