NEW ORLEANS LOOKS FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN SATURDAY AT HOUSTON BAPTIST

New Orleans- It will be two teams looking to crack the win column in the Southland Conference (SLC) when the University of New Orleans (4-6, 0-1) faces Houston Baptist (5-6, 0-1), Saturday, Jan. 5, at Sharp Gym in Houston.  Tipoff is set for 2 p. m.

New Orleans dropped its first conference game 59-52 to Abilene Christian at home while the Huskies lost on the road to Lamar University Wednesday night, 63-50.

Leading UNO in the defeat at the hands of Abilene Christian was senior center Shania Woods.  Her 15-point 10-rebound performance against the Wildcats was her third consecutive double-double and her fourth of the season.  The Houston, Texas native averages 14.0 a game and is second in the SLC in rebounds (8.8) and field goal percentage (.479).

Woods is just 20 points shy of reaching 1-thousand points during her UNO career.

One bright spot against Abilene Christian was the second quarter.   UNO held the Wildcats to only 2 points in the period on 2-of-12 shooting from the floor.  Abilene ranks fifth in team-scoring averaging 71 points a game.  The Privateers held them to 59 points---12 below the team's average.

"You can't hold on to losses too long," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.  "But we'll look at the great moments and I think we'll be all right if we keep playing the defense we've been playing, capitalize on our opportunities, we'll be all right."

Houston Baptist believes that home is where the victories are as all five of their victories this season have come at Sharp Gym.

Senior guard Amanda Johnson is HBU's leading scorer at 11.9 points a contest followed by Megan Valdez-Crader (9.9), Sophie Taylor (9.5), and Taylor Kollmorgen (8.5).   Kollmorgen is the leader in rebounds at 7.2.

In Houston Baptist's loss to Lamar, Lauren Calver, a junior, had 7 points and 11 rebounds.

The last time New Orleans faced Houston Baptist was Dec. 30, 2017, a 70-52 Privateer win at Lakefront Arena.
