SHANIA WOODS APPROACHES CAREER-MILESTONE AS PRIVATEERS HOST LAMAR

New Orleans-The University of New Orleans women's basketball team returns home with hopes of collecting its first Southland Conference victory of the season when Lamar University comes to town, Wednesday, Jan. 9, 7 p. m. at Lakefront Arena.

New Orleans (4-7,0-2) got a career-high 22 points from guard Alyssa Quixley in an 83-74 loss at Houston Baptist last Saturday.  Lamar (9-4,2-0) defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 76-58.

Privateer center Shania Woods needs eight points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her UNO career.  Her 12-point, 11-rebound effort versus Houston Baptist was her fourth consecutive double-double and her fifth of the season.  The Houston, Texas native is 9th among Southland Conference scorers at 13.9, 2nd in rebounding with 9.0 and 4th in field goal percentage at .472.

"It's a testament to the work that Shania has put in to help turn this program around," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport. "She's a part of the foundation she's been very consistent and I'm happy for her.  People underestimate how hard it is to get a double-double.  I don't care if it's 10-points and 10-rebounds, you have to work for those points and rebounds and to do it night-in–and night-out that's an accomplishment."

Jada Duncantell is the next leading scorer at 9.2 a contest.  The sophomore from Natchitoches, Louisiana is sixth in the conference in steals at 2.0 a game.

Junior center Whitley Larry leads the Southland in blocks with a total of 21, that's 1.9 an outing.  The Privateers rank 2nd in the conference in blocks with 4.27.

Lamar was the preseason pick to repeat as Southland Conference regular season champs.  They have three of the top six scorers in the conference in Moe Kinard (18.2), Chastadie Barrs (15.5) and Miya Crump (14.7), Barrs leads the SLC in assists with 5.3 a contest.

As a team, the Cardinals lead the SLC in scoring (80.4), 3-pointers made (82), steals (209), offensive rebounds (18.2 a game) and turnover margin (11.1).

"They stick to what they do.  And what they do well is penetrate for layups or three 3's, and of course 40 minutes of defense," said Davenport.
