New Orleans- You can't blame the University of New Orleans for having revenge on their minds when they host the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), Saturday, at Lakefront Arena. After all, one week ago, UIW picked up their first win at home after 7 tries with a win over New Orleans (6-12, 2-7 Southland).
The Privateers will have a chance to get even with Incarnate Word (2-17, 2-6 Southland) when the two meet again, Feb. 2 at 2 p. m.
Since the 81-69 victory by Incarnate Word last week, the Privateers defeated Northwestern State on the road, 67-62 while UIW dropped a close 60-59 decision to Houston Baptist.
Shania Woods, who turned in one of her 7 double-doubles (27 points,10 rebounds) in the loss to UIW, leads New Orleans in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 points and 8.5 rebounds. The senior is the second leading rebounder in the Southland Conference.
Jada Duncantell, a starter for most of the season, is next averaging 7.2 points. The sophomore from Natchitoches came off the bench for 14 points against Northwestern State. She also leads UNO in assists (2.3) and steals with 40.
The Privateers continue to get solid play inside from sophomore center
Kayla Thomas, who has started the last four games and averages 6.9 points and 5.4 rebounds. Thomas had a career-high 20 points against Central Arkansas.
In the win over Northwestern State, New Orleans displayed balanced scoring with three players in double figures, Woods 14, Duncantell 14, and Pebbles Pimpton 12.
Traya Bruce and
Kayla Thomas had 9 points apiece.
Junior
Whitley Larry had 11 rebounds and three blocks against the Demons. Larry is the Southland Conference leader in blocks with 35.
UIW will rely on junior guard Imani Robinson, who averages 10 points a contest but had 26 points in the Cardinals win over New Orleans last week.
The Privateers-Cardinals match is the opener of a doubleheader. The New Orleans and Incarnate Word men's teams will take the court at Lakefront Arena 45 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
